Multi-vendor marketplace development.

Marketplaces are not shops with extra users. The money flow is the hard part.

A marketplace looks like a store from the front and is a payments platform underneath. You are not just taking money — you are taking it on behalf of someone else, holding it, taking a cut, paying out on a schedule, and handling what happens when a buyer disputes a transaction after the seller has already been paid. Getting that wrong is expensive in a way that a normal store bug is not.

What’s included

  • Seller onboarding, verification and approval workflow
  • Vendor dashboards for products, orders and earnings
  • Commission models: percentage, flat, tiered or per-category
  • Split payments and scheduled payouts
  • Order routing and multi-vendor cart handling
  • Ratings, reviews and moderation tooling
  • Dispute, refund and chargeback handling across parties

The money flow decides your architecture

Do you collect payment and pay sellers later, or split at the point of sale? The first makes you responsible for holding other people's money, which has real regulatory implications in most jurisdictions. The second is usually cleaner — Stripe Connect and similar exist precisely for this. That decision shapes everything else, so it comes first.

Multi-vendor carts

A buyer with items from three sellers creates one order that must become three fulfilments, three payouts, and potentially three shipping charges and three refund paths. Modelling that properly at the start avoids a great deal of pain later, particularly around partial refunds.

Cold start

The hardest problem is not technical. A marketplace with no sellers has nothing for buyers, and with no buyers it cannot attract sellers. Worth having a plan for that before commissioning the build — and it may mean the first version should be narrower than you imagine.

Common questions

How long does a marketplace take?

A focused first version is typically three to four months. The variables are the payment model, how much vendor self-service you need, and the fulfilment complexity.

How are payouts handled?

Usually via Stripe Connect or a similar provider that is built for platform payments and handles seller onboarding and compliance. I will advise on the options for your jurisdiction.

Can we start with a simpler version?

Yes, and usually you should. Manual seller onboarding and manual payouts are entirely workable for the first dozen sellers, and they teach you what to automate.

What about VAT and marketplace tax rules?

Marketplace facilitator rules vary by country and can make the platform liable for tax collection. I build to whatever your accountant advises — I do not give tax advice.
