Most Shopify stores start on a purchased theme, and that is often the right call. The work usually begins when the theme runs out: you need a product configurator it cannot do, an integration with your warehouse system, a B2B pricing rule, or a checkout step that the app store does not sell. That is custom Shopify development, and it is a different discipline from installing apps.

Apps are not free
Every app you install adds scripts to your storefront and a monthly fee to your bill. Ten apps is a slow store and a meaningful running cost. It is frequently cheaper over a year to build the two or three things you actually need as custom functionality than to rent nine apps for features you half-use.
Where Shopify genuinely limits you
Checkout is locked down outside Shopify Plus. Some tax and shipping logic is hard to express. Complex B2B pricing needs deliberate work. I will tell you before you commit whether your requirement fits the platform, needs Plus, or would be better served elsewhere — rather than discovering it halfway through.
Speed on Shopify
Shopify hosting is fast; most slow Shopify stores are slow because of the theme and the apps running on it. That means auditing what each app loads on each page type, deferring what is not needed above the fold, and cutting image weight. It is usually a substantial win without touching the platform.

Should we use Shopify or WooCommerce?
Shopify if you want to pay monthly and accept the platform's limits in exchange for not managing infrastructure. WooCommerce if you want ownership, no revenue share and full control. I will give you a straight answer for your situation rather than a default.
Can you migrate our existing store to Shopify?
Yes, including products, variants, customers and order history, with a redirect map so search rankings survive the move.
Do you work with Shopify Plus?
Yes. Plus is what unlocks checkout customisation and Shopify Functions, which is often the reason a store needs it.
